X cuts off replies through the API

February 23, 2026: a tool can no longer drop a reply under a stranger's post for you.

2026 on X · happened February 23, 2026 · filed February 24, 2026 · 1 min read

What happened. X's developer account said that apps may post a reply through the API only when the author of the original post has mentioned or quoted the replying account. The rule covers the self-serve tiers; Enterprise customers are exempt. Ordinary posts through the API were not affected. PiunikaWeb has the details.

Why you care. This is the end of "set it and forget it" reply tools. If a product still promises to reply for you, it's either on an Enterprise contract or working around the API, and in the second case the risk sits on your account, not theirs.

What to do with it. Use tools that tell you where to reply. Type the reply yourself. It takes a minute, and it's the only kind X now leaves alone.
