X bans apps that pay people to post

January 15, 2026: paid-to-post apps lose their API access overnight, and the reply sections get a little quieter.

What happened. X's head of product, Nikita Bier, announced that apps which pay users to post would no longer be allowed on the platform, and that their API access was being revoked. The products built on that model, known in crypto circles as "InfoFi", wound down within days, The Block reported.

Why you care. Paying people per post produced exactly what you'd expect: thousands of accounts replying to everything, saying nothing. Those replies sat between you and the people you wanted to reach. With the money gone, a lot of that noise went with it.

What to do with it. Nothing, except notice the direction: X wants replies typed by people. If a tool you use posts for you, expect it to be next.
